Place des Terreaux (Lyon)

France / Rhone-Alpes / Lyon
 square, interesting place

Standing proud in this square which faces the 17C façade of St-Peter's Palace (le palais Saint-Pierre) is a monumental lead fountain by Bartholdi whose four horses symbolise rivers flowing into the Ocean. The square is the lively centre of the town and the setting of the execution in 1642 of Cinq-Mars. The square was renovated by Daniel Buren who endowed it with granite paving accompanied with 14 pillars and 69 water jets. The night lighting completes the development. (viamichelin.com)
