Part of the Brooklyn Water Works system, pumped water from Twin Lakes through tunnels under Sunrise Highway and into the Ridgewood Reservoir. The Water Works ceased to exist in 1899 when Brooklyn became a part of New York City, but the Long Island reservoirs were kept operational as a backup until 1977.
