MHibbs - yes, they kept the 3 other reactors going after the #4 meltdown. Kevin - This is a stop on the Exclusion Zone tours from Kiev. There is a maximum time limit, but you can get within 300 M of the sarcophagus for the damaged #4 reactor and pay your respects at the monument for the victims of the accident. Anna - Overall, there is less risk of environmental damage from nuclear power than from any of the other main forms of power generation. Wind, Hydro, and Solar being the cleanest, but also the lowest in forms of power generation. another person - the 3 other reactors were not all shut down at once as this station used to generate about 10% of Ukraine's total energy. Reactor 4 obviously never worked again after the total meltdown, & work on reactors #5 and 6 was halted after the #4 accident. Those unfinished reactors never were completed. Reactor # 1 suffered a partial meltdown back in 1982, but the details were covered up until the fall of the Soviet Union. The damage to reactor #1 was repaired and it put back into service in months. The fire in the turbine hall of Reactor #2 led to it's shutdown and decommissioning in 1991. Reactor #1 was finally shutdown in 1996 and the remaining reactor #3 was decommissioned in a ceremony by then president Leonid Kuchma on December 15, 2000.
