The island of Vaitupu is the largest island taking up much of Vaitupu Atoll. It is the only inhabited island (except 13 people on Temotu), with a population of 1,591 (2002 census). The main village is Asau. Although not the capital, Taitupu has Tuvalu's largest land area and assists in the decentralization of government facilities, such as Education and Agricultural Research.
