Residential neighbourhood in Ft. Lauderdale. Known for the large number of mature trees in the area. Shady Banks has a past history of drug runners using the houses along the New River to bring shipments into the country. At least one of the homes had a boat dock that came in under a part of the house to hide the unloading process.

  • After being vacant for more than a decade, that drug lord house has been resold a number of times and now torn down to be replaced by present owner.
  • Shady Banks is now known for two fine City of Fort Lauderdale parks. Hortt Park has taken over the entire former school site in the heart of Shady Banks. As of 2015, it has a beautiful new community center, playground, sand volleyball, soccer field, softball field, two half court basketball, a full tennis court, exercise path with outdoor gym equipment. Many neighborhood activities occur there throughout the year, such as the semi-annual neighborhood yard sales, Christmas hayride and potluck dinner, Easter egg hunts, movies in the park, and more. Also, on the southern edge of Shady Banks is the Bill Keith Preserve Park. It's a peaceful, shady nature preserve along the banks of the New River. It features mulched paths and wooden board walks with seating areas among the trees. One can observe blue crabs, fish, and all sorts of water birds, as well as passing boaters who frequently greet you. It's a great place to sit and sketch nature, stroll, picnic, or meditate. There are periodic volunteer clean up events in case any teens or scout troops need community service hours.
