K S Hegde Medical Academy was established in 1999 by the Nitte Education Trust (NET). The college is named after the visionary and founder, late Justice K S Hegde, former Justice of the Supreme Court of India and former Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

The Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital, is a full fledged 750 bed hospital attached to the Institute. The hospital has state-of-the-art facilities in General Medicine, Paediatrics, Dermatology, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Radiology and Anaesthesiology. It houses the Emergency and Casualty sections, Out-patient consultation rooms and In-patient wards. It is also equipped with 11 modern operation theatres with facilities for pre and post - operative care, fully computerised C-arm with IITV, Spiral CT scan, MRI scan, Dialysis unit, Ultrasonography, Color Dopplers, 500 ma X-ray machine, Mammography and an Intensive Care Unit.

Keeping pace with changes in health sciences and technology, facilities in super-specialities like Cardiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Paediatric Surgery, Urology, Nephrology, Plastic Surgery, Gastroenterology and Oncology are a part of the health care program of the Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital and the K S Hegde Medical Academy.

The Medical Sciences Complex is situated on a 45-acre campus in Deralakatte, Mangalore. Mangalore is an important sea port on the West Coast of Karnataka in India. It is about 800 kms south of Mumbai and 350 kms west of Bangalore. It is the district head-quarters and is well-connected to the neighbouring states by an efficient network of road, rail and air transport.

By air: International flights operate between Mangalore and Dubai thrice a week. Daily flights operate between Mangalore and Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai & Kochi.

By train: Mangalore is connected by the Konkan railways and the Southern railways. There are daily trains from Mangalore to New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Thiruvananthapuram.

By bus: Daily buses ply from Mangalore to Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Goa, Mysore, Hassan, Madurai, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and most other places.
