Meizhou Island can be visited from Putian. The island features a couple of very impressive temples dedicated to Matsu, to whom Chinese seafarers, particularily Chinese from Taiwan, pay homage to. The Taiwanese build and maintain the temple complexes, and thousands of Taiwanese visit the temples on March 23rd, Matsu birthday. THe island is a few miles offshore, and the trip to the island is very interesting as one see all kinds of aquaculture.
