Salamis island is known for the Battle of Salamis, the decisive naval victory of the allied Greek fleet, led by Themistocles, over the Persian Empire in 480 BC. It is said to be the birthplace of Ajax and Euripides, the latter's birth being popularly placed on the day of the battle. In modern times, it is home to Salamis Naval Base, headquarters for the Hellenic Navy. After the Fourth Crusade (1202-1204) Salamis came to domination of western rulers. In the late 14th century the indigenous population was strengthened by Arvanite settlers. In 1674 the consul Jean Siraud refered that in the island lived only 600 people, partly greek-speaking partly Arvanites.During the 20th century the population increased due to the proximity to Athens.Salamis is also known as Koulouri. The name "Kolouris" has been found in an inscription of 4th century bC
