  • If you happen to pass by Ponda-Goa please dont forget to visit this this little place called SILVANAGAR once known as D'Silva Colony. This place is about 1 km distance away from Ponda Bus Station. It is just close to St.Mary's High School and St. Anne's Church. Silvanagar belonged to 2 Tolentino Da Silva brothers during the erstwhile Portuguese Regime. After their death, due to various circumstances the property was divided by the heirs who were many. One of the Tolentino Da Silva brothers was Mr. Antonio Jose Tolentino Da Silva who was Lieutenant in the erstwhile Portuguese Army. He died a very brutal death at the hands of Ranes who were bandits at that time in Sattari taluka of Goa. Whilst taking a bath at one of the ponds in Sattari village one of the Rane bandits shot at him. Later on it was found out that it was the wrong target. His mortal remains still lies in the Ponda Cemetry wherein there is a mention about the cause of his death at the hands of Ranes from a gunshot. May his soul rest in peace. After his death his wife Mrs.Conceicao Josefa Soares de Melo e Silva took over the reigns to look after the family of 8 and later on after her death too after a long struggle the property of Mr. Antonio Jose Tolentino Da Silva was divided among his heirs that included all the brothers and sisters also, some of them well settled in Portugal. Before the place was a vast land with paddyfields, coconut grooves, fruit trees and the Palatial houses of the 2 brothers still in place even after more than 100 of years. Most of the property was sold during the initial phasese of partition, which were bought by some buyers who could not even buy a piece of meal, May God forgive them and me, who still owe some money to us, and still some property is under dispute. The Old House of Mr. Antonio is still there with all its splendour and colour and an old Well, of which waters we used to drink and take bath and dip inside during the times of Sao Joao. So, Please my humble request to you is whenever you visit Goa and especially Ponda do Visit SILVANAGAR and see the beautiful St. Anne's Church and our old house of Mr. Antonio Jose Tolention da Silva which is now partly renovated and belongs to Mr.Savio Alirio Tolentino da Silva, Mr.Stephen Jeremias Hugo Tolentino da Silva, Mr. Cyril da Silva and Mr. Orlando da Silva ,co-owners of the old house. Kindly feel free to write to me after you visit SILVANAGAR, there are many more other interesting places to see in Ponda and Goa which I will constantly write about.
