Former Whitney Museum of American Art which was designed c. 1966 in the Brutalist style by noted architect Marcel Breuer. After the Whitney relocated to the High Line, the building was leased to the Metropolitan Museum of Art which called it the Met Breuer.

It is being subleased by the Frick Museum starting in 2021 during their renovation by Selldorf Architects with Stephen Saitas Designs. Their collection will be presented across three floors of the Breuer building, with paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts organized by time period, geographic region, and media. Removed from the mansion’s domestic setting and thereby freed of the reminder of their practical function, a set of the mansion's Mughal carpets will be hung on the walls like paintings. The Frick Madison will also include a reading room with resources from the Frick Art Reference Library, which will be available to researchers and the general public.

In 2023, the building was purchased by Sotheby's auction house to become their world headquarters in 2024.
