Railroad bridge connecting Tumen (PRC) and Namyang (DPRK)

Korea (North) / Hamgyongbukto / Namyang /
 bridge, railway bridge, 1933_construction

The construction of this bridge was completed in 1932, and it was the second railway bridge across the Tumen River (after the first bridge between Kaishandun and SangSambong). The bridge is designed and built to support two lanes, but only one lane, on the right hand side seen from the Chinese side (the southern side on this satellite image) is the railway. The other lane to the left (the northern side on this image) was originally a pedestrian walkway, and old photographs of the bridge from the 1930s show ethnic Korean residents crossing the bridge on foot on the walkway. The railway is still in use. Whereas, it is not known exactly when the walkway was abolished (the road bridge to the north was built in 1941), but as of now the left-hand half of the bridge is stripped of its surface structure and only the steel frames remain, so people can no longer actually walk on it.
