Middleham Castle was the childhood home of Richard III, last Plantagenet king of England. It was home to Warwick the Kingmaker. The stone castle was originally built in the 12th Century (replacing a Norman 'Motte and Bailey' castle situated a little way to the south).
A substantial ruin remains, in the care of English Heritage. The castle is open to the public.
