One of many monastic ruins in north Yorkshire. Like most, Jervaulx was a Cistercian house. It was founded in the 12th Century and dissolved in the 16th by Henry VIII. The monastery's abbot at that time became involved in 'the Pilgrimage of Grace', opposing Henry's actions, and the abbey suffered even more as a consequence.

In 1279, the abbot (Phillip) was murdered by one of his monks!

In private ownership, Jervaulx Abbey is supported by English Heritage and is open to the public.
