castle, house, cave / cave(s)
Founded by William the Conqueror in 1067, but little of the Medieval structure remains; instead there is the 17th-century Ducal Mansion built for the Duke of Newcastle, burned in Reform riots in 1831, and restored by T.C. Hine in 1878 as Britain's first municipally owned art gallery. It has pleasant grounds, commanding views from Castle Rock, and sandstone caves beneath, of which there are daily tours. There is an admission charge unless you can produce a Nottingham City Council library card.
