The Falkland Islands

Falkland Islands / Port Howard /
archipelago, draw only border, British oversea territory, territorial dispute

The Falkland Islands are an archipelago in the South Atlantic comprised of two main islands; East Falkland and West Falkland and 776 smaller islands. A British Overseas Territory, the Falklands have internal self-governance, with the United Kingdom taking responsibility for their defence and foreign affairs. The islands' capital is the city of Stanley on East Falkland and as of the 2012 census, the year-round population was 2,932.

The islands are the subject of a long-standing territorial dispute between the United Kingdom and Argentina, who went to war over control of the islands in 1982. A 2013 referendum on the political status of the islands as a British Territory resulted in 99.8% percent of island residents favoring the continued existence of British rule, results which have not been officially recognized by Argentina.
