City with a population of 32,736 in 2010. County seat of Dutchess County. First settled by the Dutch in 1659, founded as a town in 1687. It was designated the state capital after Kingston was destroyed by the British in 1777 and remained capital until 1788. New York ratified the US Constitution here in that year. Incorporated as a village in 1799 and as a city in 1854. Its early economy was built on whale processing and expanded into light industry in the 19th century.

Famously repeatedly referenced by Gene Hackman's character in the movie The French Connection. Famous natives and residents include political operative G. Gordon Liddy and B-movie director Ed Wood.
