Hingotanan National High School is the first and only secondary level school being granted to an island barangay in this north-eastern part of Bohol, by the national government and operates on a funding from the Department of Education and Culture. The idea to open up this secondary level of education in the island in the early 70's could be greatly attributed to the unselfish breed of talents and successful professionals from this uniquely remote paradise of unmapped and uncharted coral island within the southern boundaries of Leyte Gulf that spans between the provinces of Bohol, Cebu and Leyte in the Central Visayas region.

  • The Hingotanan National High School, formerly called Hingotanan Barangay High School, started to operate in the island in 1972. The materials for the building were taken out from the dismantled Elementary School which formerly stood at the center of the school premises. The constructed High School with materials from the old building was placed at the left side, giving the center place as an enlarged playground for parades and other school and community activities. When the High School was constructed, more elementary school buildings were also added, coming from the offered building materials of the Marcos Regime. The buildings were called Marcos-type buildings which were made of cement, steel and wood. The over-all buildings in the school premises show a rectangular formation with standing mantalisay and poplar trees along the lanes of the school playground, which provide a very beautiful scenery of the whole area, being carpeted by bermuda grasses. This was the High School where I graduated. Right after my elementary school, the first year high school class was opened with a number of young and older students coming from Hingotanan island. The following year, the second year class of the High School was opened, witnessing to the enrollment of other students from the surrounding fishing islands. And during the third year the third year high school was opened and then the fourth year class. In l972 the first class batch of more than 20 students graduated and marked the continuing development of the only village High School, serving the small fishing islands in the province of Bohol. I was among the first batch. After my graduation in 1979 from Silliman University in Dumaguete, I came back to this home island as one of its teachers. For a number of years, students enrolling in this high school had to pay for their monthly fees. The making of the high school into a National High School makes it possible for the new students to be enrolled without payment since the school gets subsidy, if not, full support from the national government. Jefford Canas who is now named as the new principal of the Hingotanan National High School, was one of my former students.

  • Hello to Hingotanon how is lyf now...
  • I was in Hingotanan Island during last summer in July and a week in August this year 2008. IT was sad seeing the sad plight of the people after typhoon that devastated their seaweeeds farms plus the high prices of rice and gasoline. With a small amount from the sale of paintings, I was able to purchase 40 sacks of rice (each sack contains 48 to 50 kilos of rice), distributed to a number of families in Hingotanan and Maomaowan islands. The good thing was that the three kilos of rice, plus noodles and sardines they received were repaid by their efforts to clean the shorelines and beach. Seaweeds farming, a livelihood industry in the island for about two decades now, has left terrible mess in the shorelines, blue plastics used for seaweeeds farming, are just being thrown on the shorelines after 45 days* harvests of the seaweeds, and these have polluted the surroundings. The white beach has turned to be a dumping site of blue plastics. It was very interesting to observe that a simple distribution of some kilos of rice could mobilize people to work together for cleaning up their surroundings. I have put some photos of this activity in my website and in artbreak.com. www.123hjemmeside.dk/Kunst-liv-tro

  • hi there. miss u all. batch 95.
  • As the newly designated TIC of HINGOTANAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL would just like to post the HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL. At early times, Hingotanan island was settled by inhabitants who mostly originated from Cebu. These gentle people comprised a community who possessed a great love for education.History has it that our forefathers were always looking forward to educate their children. They were positive of sending their children to school in their own island and not in far away towns. They thought of establishing a primary school. So 1933, the first primary school building was constructed along the seashore(where the house of Mr. Rodrigo Abapo is presently located). It had two rooms: one room for Grade I and II classes, the other for Grade III and IV. Mr. Celestino Tabigue from Bien Unido and Mr. Simon Garcia were the first teachers. Mr. Tabigue was in the school-in-charge. In 1937, the building was demolished and transferred to the present site. At that time, Hingotanan was part of Talibon under the mayorship of the late Maximo Garcia.
  • In 1945, right after the war, Mr. Joveno Mabalatan assumed as the school-in-charge and in 1947, it became an elementary school. After his retirement, Mr.Zosimo P. Aton a native of this island, took over the position and became full-fledged Principal I to manage the elementary department. However, it was realized that pupils who graduated in the elementary level must continue their study to the next level. Considering also that Hingotanan is an island and that students needed to enroll in secondary schools in far places, the whole community felt an indire need of pursuing the establishment of the high school level. So, in 1968, the secondary level was established due to the great effort of Engineer Andres L. Canas. At the early development of the High School department, Mr. Pedro L. Canas was the first and the lone teacher of the secondary school. Five years after, faculty members increased in number and were under the administration and supervision of the elementary school principal, Mr. Zosimo P. Aton. When the memorandum of the DECS was passed to the effect of the separation of the elementary department from the secondary in terms of administration and supervision, Mr. Liberato B. Labajo became the head teacher of this institution. At present, this school has seventeen(17) mentors to include the head of the teaching force with a total of 500 students who are joining hand in hand to continuously raise the school's status in terms of academic and extracurricular achievements.
  • Stakeholders, alumni, friends, professional people of Hingotanan are encouraged to donate whatever kind such as laptops, computers, projectors, air conditioning unit or whatever or cash for the welfare of this institution. Electricity is not anymore a problem in the island due to generators acquired by the school.
  • I've been travelling different places in this world but there's no place like home, "My Paradise Island of Hingotanan." An Island of Professionals".I missed my lovely family, relatives, neighbors and friends. Hoping to see you all again, soon.May God Almighty protect this Island of ours from calamities.
