Car Dike Roman Canal Northern Section

Large sections of this ancient Roman civil engineering project remain. This is the most northerly section known. The purpose of the canal is not known. It may have been for drainage or for transport. Parts of it have been narrowed or filled in over the centuries.

  • Work on the end of the canal suggests that it was connected to the River Witham that would have been tidal up to this point.
  • It does not flow west through Dunston. It continues towards Washingbrough
