Five story 100 x 100 foot building erected in 1911 and enlarged in 1913. The completion of a four story 106 ft. by 161 ft addition in 1919 brought the total factory area to 240,000 sq. ft. Home of the Pullman Revolving Seat Bed Davenport, the Pullman Couch Co. was founded in Chicago in 1906 by Jacob Schnadig and his brother-in-law, Julius Kramer. The two men gave the name “Pullman” to the small furniture-manufacturing business they bought because they planned the new company while they were eating lunch in the Pullman Building on Michigan Ave.
The Pullman Couch Co. made parlor suites and overstuffed rockers. What made the business profitable, however, was a patent it bought for an inner-mattress davenport-bed. A 1923 ad for the Pullman Davenport states, “with a Pullman in the living room, the extra bedroom is permanently solved”, Pullman was in business until 1954, when it became the Schnadig Corporation. The Buildings were destroyed by fire in January 2013.
