town, seaport

Town and port on the Sierra Leone river that was used by the Delco company for iron ore shipments from the Marampa iron ore mines which arrived at the port via an 84 km. railway. The port and railway were constructed in 1930 but fell into disuse with the closure of the Delco mine in 1975. By the end of the civil war much of the railroad bed was overgrown and the rails stolen.
With the recent resurgence of mining at Tonkolili, African Minerals Limited has rehabilitated the port and the rail line. Ore is loaded onto ships and transshipped onto Cape sized ships at berth in deep water 38 miles away. African Minerals plans to extend the rail line to Tagrin Point where it intends to build a deep water port.
