Old Auckland Cemetery. Laid out from the 1840s this cemetery was superceded by Waikamete Cemetery in the 1880s. In 1905 it was offically closed and transferred to Auckland City as a public park in 1910 although internments continued until the 1980s as people were buried in their family plots.
In the 1960s large portions of the cemetery were taken for the construction of the motorway system and 4100 bodies had to be exhumed. These were identified as much as possible and reinterred in two sites within the remaining cemetery.
