Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center is attuned to the healthcare issues that matter to the people of North Brooklyn. Woodhull focuses on preventing disease and promoting healthy lifestyles by reaching out to the community at 15 convenient locations. The main building was designed by Kallmann & McKinnell in the Modern/Brutalist style.
Woodhull is a leader in the fight against childhood asthma, which disproportionately affects young Brooklynites. Recently, Woodhull's highly-regarded Asthma program was awarded $900,000 over five years to partner with local schools and the North Brooklyn Asthma Action Alliance to introduce ways for children with asthma to manage this debilitating disease. Already the Pediatric Asthma program's effective, patient-centered approach has paid off. The program, which documents the stabilization of a patient's asthma prior to discharge from either the emergency room or as an inpatient, has shown a significant drop in return visits to Woodhull.
Designated by New York State as an AIDS Center, Woodhull's Paul Poroski Family Center provides comprehensive care to individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS. Making health education a top priority, Woodhull promotes community awareness of HIV/AIDS through extensive outreach and education. Other specialty services include the Women's Health Initiative Program, which makes available extensive obstetrical and gynecological services, including free walk-in pregnancy testing, family planning and pre- and post-natal care. Woodhull is particularly concerned with reaching vulnerable populations, such as adolescents and high-risk pregnant mothers. Woodhull also is home to a Diabetic Case Management program. This nurse-managed service is interdisciplinary, with an emphasis on helping diabetic patients manage their illness. The program dispenses information about the disease, proper nutrition and exercise, stress reduction and health maintenance.
Woodhull believes that patients deserve the best service possible, and has reduced waiting time in clinics and made it easier to schedule an appointment. In addition, a specially-trained nurse is available by telephone 24 hours-a-day, 7 days a week to respond to questions regarding healthcare.
The interior features murals by Keith Haring at the entry and on the second floor. They were restored in 2002 by Fine Art Conservation Group.
