Original two-story building constructed around early 1900's as the Burrow Building, the second floor of that building (240½ E Main St.) used to house shorthand reporting, general reporting, law, stenography, and typewriting services Hoss & Hoss (c. early 1910's?-c. early 1920's?), dressmaking and millinery services Miss Anne Patton (mid-August 1924-c. 1925 [relocated to Borwood Terrace]), radio repair shop Radio Hospital (c. mid 1928-late 1928), and department store chain JCPenney/J.C. Penney Co./Penney's ([occupied the first floor {240-242 E Main St.} including this floor of that building] March 27, 1929 [originally located at 319-321 E Main St. {building now part of The Henry On Main apartment}]-December 9, 1944 [building destroyed by fire, store relocated and divided into two groups – Main Store, located at the Avalon Building {building demolished around 1980's, currently a Northeast State Community College building} at 113-115 E Market St. and opened on February 22, 1945; Ready-To-Wear Main Street Store, located 234 W Main St. and opened on March 16, 1945; store office temporarily located at the 2nd floor of the John Sevier Garage as well]).
This current building was rebuilt and restored for nearly a year after the fire (1945-1946), it is a two-story, two-part commercial brick building. Businesses that were housed in this current building space were department store Wagner's/H.W. Wagner Co. (June 17, 1954 [occupied the second half of this building's first floor {240 E Main St.} including this floor]-May 29, 1955), and women's clothing store Nettie Lee Shop/Nettie Lee Shops/Nettie Lee Ladies' Shop ([occupied two spaces of this building's first floor {240-242 E Main St.} including this floor] July 25, 1955 [originally located at 204-206 E Main St.]-mid-September 1982 [relocated to The Mall at Johnson City at 2011 N Roan St.]). The current space is now a craft and hobby store, relocated from the Colonial Center at the two-story strip mall's lower level at 2234 N Roan St. (building demolished in Summer 2002, currently a modern eight-storefront strip mall and Walgreens) to this location in May 2002.
