archaeological site, tell (mound)

Also known as Mancılık Kalesi, the ancient settlement mound south of modern Mancılık is identified as Roman Larissa. Remains date from the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Classical and Hellenistic, and Roman-Byzantine periods. In the early 10th century, Larissa became the seat of a kelisoura, and in the late 10th century, it became the seat of a minor theme.
