Seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fall River since the creation of the diocese by Pope Pius X in 1904. Church dates to 1855, with the 190-foot steeple completed three years later. It is the oldest extant Roman Catholic church in the city, and was one of the first Roman Catholic parishes in the city.

Its interior includes intricate woodwork, with some gilding above the sanctuary. The church also includes two side chapels beside the sanctuary, as well as the attached rectory to the rear.
