The naval architecture education in Turkey is closely related to the history of Istanbul Technical University and dates back to 1734. When the navy needed qualified officers, "Humbarhane ve Mühendishane" school was founded by the Ottoman Sultan Mahmut I. The name of the school changed over the years. Later, Mühendishane-i Bahri Hümayun School offered naval architecture education based on mathematics and geometry. The need for naval and civil naval architects led to the establishment of other schools such as Bahriye Mektebi and Sefain-i Ticariye.

The first graduates during Turkish Republic, in 1923 are Ata Nutku and Muhittin Etingü who are the pioneers of the modern naval architecture education. Finally in 1945, Istanbul Technical University obtained its present name. The naval architecture curriculum was offered in the Mechanical Engineering Faculty. Naval architecture education was separated from the Mechanical Engineering Faculty when the academic staff established the Faculty of Naval Architecture in 1971. Only naval architecture curriculum was available. In 1982, the name was changed into its present name (Faculty of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering), and two different programs offered. Each year, approximately 40 students are admitted to each program and around 60 students graduate successfully.

The faculty moved to its new building in the modern Ayazağa Campus in 1988. With its qualified academic staff and laboratories, the faculty is proud to offer naval architecture, marine and ocean engineering programs
