During the move, the lighthouse was set up with a sophisticated laser level warning system. Throughout the move alarm warnings kept sounding. This was solved by removing the equipment and installing a string and plumb bob

  • Relocation of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse took place in the summer of 1999, after several years of preparation by the National Park Service. The decision to relocate it was not taken likely and was based on the best available science. Many individuals and groups tried to delay or halt the move, refusing to believe the tower was in danger of being overrun by the sea due to island migration. But the lighthouse was relocated successfully and the naysayers were proven wrong. The tracks represent the direction the lighthouse was moved, from upper right to lower left.
