Manhasset LIRR Viaduct (Thomaston, New York)

Beginning in 1897, the Long Island Railroad was extended from Great Neck to Manhasset and through Plandome to Port Washington. The extension required building a trestle across the marsh at the end of Manhasset Bay, and a contract was made with the Carnegie Steel Company which subcontracted with the King Bridge Company to do the actual construction at a cost of $60,000 at the time.. 480 tons of steel were used to build the 679ft long, 181ft high viaduct over Manhasset valley, by far the highest railroad bridge on Long Island. It was completed in 1898.
