Construction of Fort Montgomery began in 1841.

As of 1851, it was intended to be armed with sixty-four 32-pound and twelve 24-pound guns, three field pieces, forty flank howitzers, thirty-two 8" heavy seacoast howitzers, two 10" heavy mortars, four light 10" mortars, two light 8" mortars, two 16" stone mortars and five Coehorn mortars for a total of 164 guns.

This was to be the most heavily defended fort built under the Third-System along the northern frontier. The fort was never completed.

  • AKA "Fort Blunder," as it was found to be north of the 45th parallel - the initial border survey was wrong. Daniel Wabster and Lord Ashburton eventually decided to leave the border on the line as surveyed.
