The Robert Brooks Homes were constructed in 1943 as housing for war time workers. The two story rowhouses originally contained 834 units and over time became home to low income African Americans. In 1961 three 16 story high-rise apartment buildings were added. By 2001 following deteriorating maintenance and numerous other issues resulting from neglect and mismanagement by the Chicago Housing Authority, the high rises were demolished and the remaining homes were rehabilitated. At that time the number of units was reduced from 834 to 329.
