Abandoned capital of Montserrat. Evacuated completely after 1997 eruptions of Soufriere Hills volcano. Later buried by mud and ash flows, with more than 50% of buildings completely destroyed.

  • 50%? Much closer to 90%, if not higher. The buildings that aren't buried Pompeii-style under 30 feet of ash concrete are all burnt. Pyroclastic flows can be either mostly solid or mostly gaseous; the former buries, the latter burns. This city has seen at least half a dozen of each kind since it was abandoned.
