One of over 60 Civil Defense sirens employed by the city of Rochester in the 1940s and 1950s. This siren was manufactured locally by The Sterling Siren Fire Alarm Company, which at the time, had a major facility on Allen Street.
Rochester's siren system was unique in that it was one of the only known ones at the time to use Sterling Siren products almost exclusively, utilizing a mix of Model M 5HP General Alarm Sirens, and Type F 1/4HP Factory sirens to fill in coverage gaps.
Of the more than 60 sirens utilized in the system, this is the only known Model M to remain in place, with all others being ripped out and presumably sent off to be scrapped.
