place with historical importance, signboard, font

A fixture of the City of Akron since its installation in 1930. The present-day diamond-shaped sign was installed in 1940 replacing the original rectangular sign. Measuring 72 by 40 feet the sign was illuminated with over 1,100 light bulbs. By 1963 another update had the sign flash "GO...GO...GOODYEAR". The sign went dark during the US Energy Crisis in 1978 and remained dark until 1991 when a hostile takeover of Goodyear by Sir James Goldsmith was thwarted. Starting in 2001 the sign added the company's slogan "On the Wings of Goodyear" which remained until 2007. The sign went dark once again in 2015 after Goodyear vacated its former headquarters. Following a meticulous crowdfunded restoration, the sign was re-illuminated in 2023 with 1,184 LED light bulbs.
