The Insane Asylum stood near the site of what is now the Columbia Health Care Center (a nursing home, built in 1966). The County authorized the purchase of what had once been a hotel, from the heirs of Maj. Elbert Dickason. The property included two acres with a barn, and became known as the county's "poor house." The first residents, moved into the facility in December 1858. The earliest burial in the "potter's field" was that of John Judson Pieque, who died in December 1871. The last recorded burials were Joseph Bazarras (1891-1971) and Mary Jarzombowski (1880-1971).
