A brief history of air defense in the Urals during the Soviet era.
The emergence of new types of strategic bombers capable of striking the Urals region with nuclear warheads in the United States during World War II forced a new look at the problem of protecting the industrial centers of the Urals from air strikes. In June 1948 the Politburo of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks (b) and the Council of Ministers of the USSR defined a new structure of the Air Defense Forces. Air defense districts and armies were disbanded and air defense districts were created on their basis. In accordance with this decision in January 1949 from Moscow to Sverdlovsk arrived management of the 5th Air Defense Corps, on the basis of which was started the formation of the task force of the Ural Air Defense District. But even before that, almost immediately after the end of World War II begins to strengthen the air defense of the Urals.
