The direction of Military Intelligence ( DRM ) is a branch of the French Ministry of Defence and a body joint head of military intelligence and military interest for all French armed forces . DRM is responsible for the collection of information, analysis and dissemination of intelligence to the armed forces in operations and central agencies of the defense. It is part of the French intelligence community .

DRM was created by Decree n o 92-523 of 16 June 1992 on the initiative of Pierre Joxe , then Minister of Defence, to bring together the various intelligence services of armies. It was created in the aftermath of the Gulf War . It became apparent that the military intelligence services was low and too dispersed, making France too dependent on U.S. sources.

From 1992, against Admiral Yves de Kersauson of Pennendreff is called to attend the General Heinrich is charged by the government to establish the direction of military intelligence. From 1998 to 2001 he was the only admiral in charge of the DRM. True "pope" of the intelligence community, he introduced "dialogues" with British, German, Canadian, Belgian, Spanish and Italian American counterparts, who helped install the DRM in France and abroad.
