This circle has been named after Sangolli (Sangolli is a small village in the Belgaum district of Karnataka) Rayanna, a freedom fighter. Sangolli Rayanna was the chieftain of queen Chennamma of Kittur (popolarly called as Kittur Chennamma). Chennamma is the first women to fight against the British in the struggle for Indian Independence.
