This cemetery once contained the remains of the many Italians who lived in Mogadishu prior to the 1970s. It was moved here from a site in central Mogadishu on the orders of dictator Mohammed Siad Barre. In 2005, millitants destroyed most of the graves as "infidel" and threw the bodies into the sea; all in all, over 700 corpses were disinterred.
