Mr R L Mina, the conservator of the forest said this is the first reserve in the state declared under Wildlife Protection Act. The shallow water reservior known as Dhandh in local 'kutchi' is spread across twenty two thousand hectares. The 'Dhandh' attracts thousands of tourists and bird watchers, he said. He said more than one lakh migratory birds visit the 'Dhandh' after monsoon and camp here till the end of winter. In the census made last year by the department, 42 varieties of birds were found here, including Flamingo, Pelican, Cranes, Coots, Ducks, Demoseille Cranes and many others. With the declaration of conservation reserve, the commercial activities in the 'Dhandh' like tree -cutting and fishing in the lake will be restricted. Wildlife sanctuary in the great and small Rann of Kutch has also been notified by biosphere reserve by the Union government. This is the 15th reserve declared by the union government and first in western India, Mr Mina said. The sanctuary spread across 12000 square kilometers is the abode of rare wild ass now only found in the Ran of Kutch in the entire world. The wetland of Rann also attracts more than one and a half lakh greater flamingos who hatch eggs in their large colony. ''This is the bigest camp of flamingoes in Asia,'' he claimed. With the notification of biosphere reserve, the Union Government will help the state to develop the area according to the needs of local population and encouragement of ecological balance,
  • Other Sites NEAR CHHARI DHANDH Bird RESERVE Than Monastery and Dinodhar Hill Dinodhar Hill, an inactive volcano 386 meters high, has a temple dedicated to Dhoramnath at its peak. Dhoramnath is said to have stood on his head for 12 years as penance for a curse he made. The gods begged him to stop and he obliged on the condition that the first place he looked toward became barren – hence the Rann of Kachchh came to be. He then founded the exclusive monastic order, Kanfata (slit-ears). Atop Dinodhar, you will see spectacular views of the Great Rann and Chhari Dhandh wetland, especially after a good rain. This area abounds with wildlife and flora making it the ideal location for trekking. At the bottom of Dinodhar is the inviting and serene 500-year-old Than Monastery also belonging to the Kanfata sect. The first floor of the Than has lovely Kamangari paintings of Hindu deities, floral designs, and the Rajasthani version of Romeo and Juliet (Dhola and Maru) depicted on the walls. There is a friendly caretaker here who is happy to entertain questions or host you should you choose to spend the night. Moti Virani Shantidas Tulsidas Solanki’s family is one of the last artisan families who still create handcrafted silver jewelry with indigenous patterns for different communities. Centre for Desert and Ocean (CEDO) was founded by the passionate ecologist, Jugal Tiwari – a skilled birdwatcher and active environmentalist. Wildlife lovers, geologists and ornithologists visit this center for research and fieldwork. Mr. Tiwari takes visitors on bird-watching safaris to the Fulay Plains. CEDO also offers accommodation. Fulay Plains and Kiro Dungar Kiro Dungar, an extinct volcano in the Fulay Plains, is about 20 km from Moti Virani. Here you will find 65 million year old fossils of snails, shells, and other marine organisms – not too mention any number of live birds. Chhari Dhandh Dhandh means large, shallow pond of rainwater. Chhari Dhandh is the largest of Kachchh’s almost three dozen dhandhs. Chhari Dhandh is 10 sq km, lying between the Banni grassland and Dinodhar Hill. Over 50 species of waterfowl can be found here, including the endangered Indian Skimmer and Dalmatian pelican. Enjoy a bird watching excursion to the wetlands of Chhari Dhandh where more than 50,000 waterfowls, 55 distinct animal species, 32 species of raptors, and some 30,000 birds have been recorded. Gujarat itself is on the migratory route of thousands of bird species making it the ideal stopping point for bird-lovers. About the half the world’s Lesser Florican, an endangered species, breeds in the grasslands of Kachchh, Saurashtra and Dahod districts during the monsoon. The only known breeding area of the Lesser Flamingo is in the Rann of Kachchh.
