James I May was sent to find new areas to settle by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He settled here on what came to be known as 'Mormon Row', because he and most of those that eventually settled it were Mormons. The ground they worked hard to own eventually returned to the hands of the US government, becoming part of Grand Teton National Park.
