Getashen subdistrict (Armenian: Գետաշենի ենթաշրջան), (Azerbaijani: Çaykənd alt Rayonu) is a disputed territory in Transcaucasia, de-facto and de-jure is part of Goygol Rayonu of Azerbaijan, but is disputed by the unrecognized Republic of Artsakh. It consists of six rural settlements: Chaikend/Getashen, Karabulak/Martunashen, Kushchu/Armavir, Goychay/Kamo, Yeni-Zod/Azat and Ablakh/Ginedzor (the names are given according to the scheme: Azerbaijani/Armenian). Until the summer of 1991, the territory was inhabited by ethnic Armenians and during the Soviet period was part of the Khanlar District of Azerbaijan SSR. With the Karabakh conflict, tensions arose between these villages and neighboring Azerbaijani ones. In February 1990, the civilians of the Armenian villages of Ablakh, Azat, Kamo and Armavir were forced to leave their places of residence due to the incessant armed attacks against them, the pressure of the regional authorities and the commanders of the internal troops. Residents of Getashen and Martunashen refused to leave their homes. For the sake of ensuring the safety of the people, on September 2, 1991, the heads of the rural communities of Getashen and Martunashen, as well as the heads of the four abandoned villages joined to the deputies of the Shahumyan District Council and the Nagorno-Karabakh Regional Council, and at a session in the city of Stepanakert, on the basis of the data of the earlier referendum, proclaimed the creation of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) within the borders of the NKAO and the Shahumyan District of the Azerbaijan SSR. The territory of the Shaumyan District of the Az. SSR and this section of the Khanlar region were enlisted to the Shaumyan District of the NKR. The Azerbaijani population of the NKAO and the Shaumyan region refused to take part in the referendum, and the Azerbaijani authorities did not recognize the right of the Armenians of Karabakh to self-determination, launching a military operation against them. Thereafter the residents of the villages of Getashen and Martunashen found themselves blocked. Communications with the outside world were cut off, food and medical supplies were carried out by helicopter from Armenia. There were regular clashes with neighboring Azerbaijani villages. In 1991, ethnic cleansing began in the Getashen sub-district - Operation "Ring", as a result of which the Armenian population of the village was forcibly deported to Armenia and Stepanakert. After that, the villages were re-settled by Azeris.
