Chemical Waste Management of Indiana (CWMI) opened the Adams Center Landfill in the late-1970s. In 1980, CWMI applied to accept disposal of hazardous waste under the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The facility closed to hazardous waste disposal in 1998 and was completely shuttered by 2001.
The landfill was the center of litigation and protests from local residents with concerns stemming from environmental justice issues. The site continues to be monitored.
