Gangotri, the origin of holy River Ganges is one of the four sites in the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit which are Gangotri, Yamnotri, Badrinath, Kedarnath respectively.
This religious place have temple of Ganga ji, which is situated on the banks of the river Bhagirathi on the Greater Himalayan Range at an altitude of 3,100 meter at Uttarkashi district of Uttrakhand India.
The original Gangotri Temple was built by the Gurkha general Amar Singh Thapa in the early 18th century.
Bhagirathi, the source of Ganga (the Ganges) originated from from Gaumukh, set in the Gangotri Glacier, and is a 19 km trek from Gangotri, confluences with Alaknanda river at Devprayag and form holy river Ganga.
“Gangotri” is Sanskrit word which means Ganga+Uttari i.e.Ganga flows in a northwesterly direction.
The temple is closed on the day of “Diwali” (October-November) every year and is reopened in May.
During this time, the idol of the goddess is kept at Mukhba village, near Harsil, one of holy place for Hindu at Uttrakhand.
