"The Appomattox Historic District encompasses much of the bustling Appomattox County seat, established in the 1890s after a fire destroyed the original courthouse a few miles away at the site of General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at the end of the Civil War. The town began as a railroad siding in the 1840s. The former train station is now a visitors’ center. In addition to its handsome churches, school buildings, and the courthouse with an unusually complete collection of court-related structures, the town includes commercial and residential buildings in a wide range of architectural styles, including Queen Anne, Gothic Revival, Classical Revival, Bungalow, Craftsman, and Colonial Revival."
