Tony "Joe Batters" Accardo was for many years the head of the Chicago Outfit, one of the few mobsters to evade prison and die of old age. Part of this was his determination to maintain a low profile. By the early 1960s, the IRS had noticed that his lavish mansion a few blocks from here was beyond (what he claimed was) his modest means, so he moved here, his home until his semi-retirement to Palm Springs in 1979.
