radar station, tropospheric scatter station, closed / former military
Built as a SAAF early warning radar site and terminal Troposcatter communications station in the SAAF Troposcatter network in the 1950's. As part of this network, the site linked communications from Durban via the radar sites at Louwsburg to Mariepskop and the Hoedspruit Air Force Base as part of South Africa's Project NATSEC. Operational in its original role through the early 2000s the site was largely shut down and now houses a minimally attended weather radar site and dome, as well as a microwave transmission tower.
