Also called Knostrop Anaerobic Digestion Facility and Knostrop Sludge Treatment Facility (STF). Managed by Yorkshire Water company. Built from autumn 2016 to May 2019 on a part of the decommissioned territory of the wastewater treatment plant to replace an ageing sludge incinerator. The plant can process up to 131 tonnes of dry sludge a day and 48,000 tonnes per year utilises conventional mesophilic AD technology, recycling 94% of the sewage sludge in Leeds to produce up to 94MWh electricity a day in two combined-heat-and-power generators, enough to meet 55% of the site’s power needs. The digested sludge is then dewatered and mixed with lime before being sold as agricultural fertilizer. А stand-alone liquor treatment plant (LTP) was also built here to treat the concentrated ammonia liquors to reduce the loads returning to the WwTW due consequence of AD biogas production.

The new plant is the latest step in the Yorkshire Water company’s ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030, also this scheme is helping to create a lower carbon future in the Lower Aire Valley.
