MVA Pfaffenau is the third and latest waste incineration plant in Vienna that was officially opened in September 2008. The furnace/boiler on two lines work according to the burning grate technology patented by Hitachi Zosen Inova company (former AE&E Inova during the construction of the plant) - more than 500 WtE plants around the world have been built using their technologies as of 2021. The estimated plant capacity is 250,000 tons of residual waste annually, collected from the southeastern districts of the city, disposal of which gives up to 407 GWh/year district heating for around 50,000 households + 68 GWh/year electricity for around 25,000 households.
Wien Energie GmbH, owner of the plant, carries out only operational management, the actual operator of the plant is Wiener Kommunal-Umweltschutzprojektgesellschaft m.b.H.
A part of the plant complex is a biogas production unit, with the help of which up to 22,000 tons of biogenic waste are processed annually (10,000 tons from organic waste bins in the inner-city and 12,000 tons of leftover food from canteen kitchens and restaurants, market waste and stored food.) Expansion of the biogas plant's capacity to 34,000 tons is planned.
