Tongyeong Under Sea Tunnel connecting Tongyeong (city) and Mireukdo (island) is the first undersea structure in Asia. Prior to the tunnel, Mireukdo was an islet at high tide and connected once again to the mainland at low tide. As Japanese fishermen began to move into Korea in large numbers during the period of colonial rule (1910-45), this undersea tunnel was constucted in 1932 to shorten the distance between the two areas.
Although initiated and implemented by the Japanese, the tunnel has great historical value as the forced labor and materials invested in its construction were provided by the Korean people.
Tongyeong Under Sea Tunnel is Registered Cultural Heritage #201.
