On 9th of May 1946 a zoopark Dvůr Králové nad Labem with area of 6.5 hectares was established on the nationalized property of private park and villa of textile businessman Richard Neumann. In 1956-1965 the ZOO expanded to 28 hectares and became the largest ZOO in Czechoslovakia.
In seventies of the 2Oth century the ZOO organized eight expeditions to Africa under leadership of Josef Wagner. About 2000 animals were brought from these expeditions and since then ZOO Dvůr Králové nad Labem specializes in African fauna. On the 8th of May 1989 the first SAFARI park in this part of Europe was opened.
